The Somnus Quintet is a Sydney-based chamber group consisting of 5 friends who share a love for music and Japanese culture. We specialise in Japanese film & anime scores, video game soundtracks, and pop music, meeting up weekly to practise and arranging our own music.
Formed in 2018 as a string quartet by members of Kuringai Youth Orchestra, we quickly grew to become a piano quintet to better accommodate the anime and video games themes we wanted to perform which heavily featured piano.
Our debut performance was at SMASH! 2018, and we have performed at every SMASH! since, as well as at Madman Anime Festival Sydney in 2020. We also had our first combined anime music gig in 2024, Memories of Spring with Sunset Morioh and KiZUNA.
Somnus Quintet was also the driving force behind JAM Fest Sydney, a Japanese and anime music festival that premiered in 2023, which is now run a seperate non-for-profit association by volunteers.
